Gary Mitchell has never been content to follow the well-worn path simply. As the founder of OnTrac® Coach, he has carved out a space where law firm owners not only build stronger practices but also reclaim the freedom that drew them to entrepreneurship in the first place. His journey began with a realization that would change the course of his career.
“After years in the spotlight, I found myself behind the curtain, guiding the one in the spotlight,” he said. “Watching the transformation of someone else’s career, knowing I had a small part in that, was what inspired me to start this business.”
When Mitchell began coaching in the legal industry, it was almost unheard of. Few firms understood what coaching could bring to the table, and spreading the word was no easy feat. Some even call him a pioneer in the space. “In the early days, coaching in the legal industry was rare. It was not well-known or practiced. That was my biggest hurdle to proving its value,” he recalled.
Two decades later, the results speak for themselves. Hundreds of clients have built thriving practices under his guidance. He has published three books, with a fourth on the way, and has been recognized among the top ten coaches and mentors in the legal industry by two separate organizations. But beyond accolades, Mitchell is proudest of the transformations he has helped spark. Law firm owners who once struggled to balance business growth with personal freedom now operate with systems, confidence, and vision.
What sets Mitchell apart is not only his coaching ability but also his entrepreneurial mindset. “My very first client told me, ‘I want to work with you because you have what I need. I am already a good lawyer. I want your entrepreneurial drive and mindset,’” he shared. Having launched his first business at 25, Mitchell brings the perspective of someone who has walked the same road as his clients. He thrives on building systems, scaling ventures, and finding growth opportunities others miss.

That entrepreneurial perspective shaped his flagship service, The Law Firm Xelerator™. Through this program, law firm owners learn how to accelerate their entrepreneurial learning curve, implement effective systems, and achieve sustainable success without being tied to their desks. It covers the full spectrum of running a practice, like business development, HR, marketing, practice management, and leadership. At its heart is a philosophy Mitchell calls the “AND” mindset. “It’s about success and freedom, not one or the other,” he explained. Clients are guided to build teams around their strengths while addressing their weaknesses, creating practices that can thrive even in their absence.
Looking ahead, Mitchell envisions franchising OnTrac® Coach. He sees untapped potential in helping other coaches adopt his systems, content, and templates to grow their own practices. Beyond the legal field, he imagines his approach being applied across professional service industries. His vision is expansive but grounded in the same belief that launched his career: attitude and mindset account for 99 percent of success. “Without it, we falter. With it, anything is possible when we set our mind to it,” he said.
Staying ahead of trends is a key aspect of how he maintains relevance in a rapidly changing industry. He is embracing artificial intelligence, using it to design educational materials and streamline workflows for clients. He believes AI will have a massive impact on law firms, and his role will be to help leaders navigate that evolution strategically rather than fearfully.
Mitchell is candid about the challenges as well. Like many of his clients, he has had to learn to get out of his own way. “I need to stop overthinking and be more present,” he admitted. “That’s been one of the greatest lessons, which is enjoying the journey as much as the outcome.”
Through OnTrac® Coach, Gary Mitchell has built more than a coaching business. He has become a trailblazing business coach to law firm owners, a trusted advisor who combines experience with vision. For those curious about his insights, he regularly shares practical strategies and reflections on his blog at OnTrac Coach Blog. His work is proof that when strategy meets mindset, lawyers can build firms that deliver both success and freedom.
