From the Coach: ‘And’ not ‘or’ — Build a successful law firm AND enjoy more freedom

Do you remember as a child when your parents took you to the ice cream store on one of
those sweltering summer evenings? I do. The store was Baskin-Robbins — with its 31 flavours.

And do you remember your mother or your father asking you which flavour you would like, and you’d say, “This one AND that one”? After all, with 31 flavours, how could you pick just one? Mine were pralines and
cream, and rocky road.

But since then, you’ve been conditioned and beaten down to believe you had to choose only one option when making a business decision — not both, not several, just one.

Enough of that! I am here to share the value of the “And” mindset.

You can build a successful and thriving law firm AND gain more freedom in your life. Here’s how:

  1. Be clear on your purpose: This involves defining your fundamental reason for running the law firm. What impact do you want to have on your clients, your community and the legal profession? Understanding your purpose provides a guiding light for decision-making and helps you stay motivated during challenging times.
  2. Be clear on your motivation: This is about understanding why you want to achieve success and freedom. Are you seeking financial security, more time with family, the ability to travel or something else entirely? Identifying your core motivations helps you align your actions with your desires.
  3. Be clear on your “why”: Your “why” is the driving force behind your purpose and motivation. It’s the deeply personal reason that fuels your passion for your law firm. It’s the emotional connection you have to your work, and it inspires you to overcome obstacles and pursue your goals with unwavering determination.
  4. Build a fantastic team around your strengths with complementary skills and experience: Recognize your own strengths and weaknesses, then build a team of individuals whose skills and expertise complement your own. This creates a well-rounded and capable team that can effectively tackle the challenges of running a law firm.
  5. Never settle for mediocrity: Strive for excellence in all aspects of your law firm, from the quality of your legal work to the level of customer service you provide. Set high standards and encourage your team to improve and grow continually.
  6. Empower your team to thrive: Create an environment where your team members feel valued, respected and empowered to contribute their best work. Provide them with the resources, support and autonomy they need to excel and reach their full potential.
  7. Never compromise your life for your career: Prioritize your personal well-being and make time for the things that are important to you outside of work. This might include spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies, travelling, or simply relaxing and recharging.
  8. Pass that along to all team members: Encourage your team members to prioritize their personal lives as well. support them in finding a healthy work-life balance and provide them with the flexibility they need to manage their personal commitments.
  9. Build an incredible marketing system: Invest in marketing strategies and tactics that effectively attract new clients and generate leads for your law firm. This might include online marketing, social media marketing, content marketing and traditional advertising.
  10. Create systems, templates and procedures to scale easily: Develop standardized systems, templates and procedures for all key aspects of your law firm. This streamlines your operations, improves efficiency and makes it easier to scale your business as it grows.
  11. Provide ongoing training and development: Invest in ongoing training and development for your team members to help them stay up to date on the latest legal trends and best practices. This improves their skills, enhances their knowledge and makes them more valuable to your firm.
  12. Reward excellent performance: Recognize and reward your team members for their hard work, dedication and outstanding performance. This could include bonuses, promotions, raises or other forms of recognition that show your appreciation for their contributions.
  13. Create a culture of inclusion, transparency, honesty and innovation: Foster a positive and supportive work environment where all team members feel valued, respected and included. Encourage open communication, transparency and honesty, and promote a culture of innovation and creativity.
  14. Create an atmosphere of shared learning, collaboration and mutual respect: Encourage your team members to learn from each other, collaborate on projects and treat each other with respect. This creates a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that enhances productivity and morale.
  15. Let people excel and never hold them back: Provide your team members with opportunities to grow, develop and advance in their careers. Don’t hold them back or limit their potential. Encourage them to pursue their goals and aspirations.
  16. Unleash your team’s excellence: Create an environment where your team members are empowered to use their skills and talents to their fullest potential. Give them the freedom to innovate, experiment and take risks.
  17. Don’t micromanage: Avoid micromanaging your team members. Trust them to do their jobs effectively and provide them with the support and guidance they need to succeed.
